ET Phone Home

This is probably one of the most surreal structures I've seen. I pass it often on my trips between north and south Namibia.

It stands near a farmhouse on the Aus - Helmeringhausen road. In this image you can just make it out on the bend in the road ... on the edge of a 40km stretch of desolate desert flatness. The whole setting is so weird, it could be from a Mad Max movie.

It's fairly old and looks like it supports two water tanks.

The wires on top? Well, that looks like an antennae of sorts but for what purpose?

I like to imagine that the farm owner is a UFO freak hoping to make contact with ETs - I've often been tempted to stop and ask what it is but the truth would probably ruin my fantasy - there's probably a simple explanation ... any bright ideas?

  1. Some sort of a radio mast/antennae ? Gosh, I really don't know ...well, at least it gives you something to mull over as you drive that desolate stretch of road, I guess ....

  2. You may be right Lynda ... but who knows, it may be a radio-controlled cement-mixer ... :)

  3. The last film I think we saw at a cinema was ET (as you might guess we are not cinema goers!) I can just imagine him using this to contact home. I would love to know what it is but ten again I agree why spoil fantasies. Interesting though. Diane

  4. Jeepers ... I can't remember when last I was in a cinema (or 'bioscope' as we used to call it) ... it's amazing that they still exist, what with TV and DVDs ...

  5. A large electrical insect zapper screen?

  6. Haha Lgsquirrel ... possibly, the insects can be a nuisance at times ... :)

  7. when i first saw it , it made me think of a kaleidescope ..so its easy to assume he must get his ideas while on drugs

  8. Hehe Monica ... well, I think to live in such isolation you need drugs, or maybe it was a crazy farmer wannabe scientist ... and who knows, perhaps he has contacted ET?

  9. The two square metal pieces put at angles at the top remind me of wind panels that are supposed to move in the wind. Maybe to propel the water in the tanks? Do you get a lot of wind there? It doesn't seem like you get a lot of rain so why would those tanks be out there on such a dusty stretch? Maybe at one time there was a house close by but it is now long gone.

  10. Hello Penny - yeah, there is still a farmhouse close by and also three or four wind driven water pumps - yes, it can get quite windy there at times, in fact last week that area and a bit further north had the worst dust storms in living memory - at Sossusvlei some tourists got lost and had to be rescued ...

  11. It collects the frame slips in the curved spacetime and will transport the owner into the future once his taxes are all paid.

Nah, I probably a ham radio antenna or just a piece of art.

  12. A time transporter you say lislemn? ... mmmm ... I'll check for any tell-tail signs when I pass it again ... but I think it would be more useful if it could transport him before his taxes are paid?

  13. Perhaps a very early spaceship landed and just rusted into the landscape?!

  14. hehe yes, ... perhaps ET's descendants are still among us, or perhaps we ARE ... oh, never mind ... :)

  17. Looks like someone already guessed what I had in mind. A make-shift wind driven water pump. Its a good idea especially, if like you say you've got the wind to turn it. :) There might also be some other stuff mixed in there. A lightening rod perhaps?

  18. Thanks for your visit and comment Kristine - yes, it looks like it may be a multi-functional structure ... maybe 'Blackberry's' big brother ... ?

  19. Late on parade as real-life got in the way. The "thing" is quite simply a refuelling station; the top antenna brings in all the politicians who need to top up from the hotbullshit kept in the tanks below.

Your mission OSC, is to stake the place out with a selection of RPG's/AK47's and bring down the judgement of the silent suffering majority onto the feckers!
