If Dead Cars Could Speak

As with derelict buildings, there's something about old abandoned cars that attracts me to them, especially when they're in unusual settings.

Perhaps it's their unknown history that intrigues me, how proud their new owners must have been at a time when animal-powered transport was probably more common than motorized.

What stories could they tell? Which roads did they travel and what sights did they see? What adventures did they take part in?

... and the obvious question, how many humans were conceived in these wrecks during moments of stolen passion?

If only they could be coaxed to speak ...

  1. Funnily enough I too adore old [abondoned] cars .... the wear and tear, faded colours, the rust, and of course the mystery that ineveitably goes with them... These are great ... I especailly love the 2 trucks (one red one) ......

  2. Thanks Gena ... many of these were photographed in the desert at Solitaire (an outpost without even one horse) - there are a whole bunch of them just lying around there ...

... you should definitely try to visit Namibia on a photographic expedition, especially the southern desert which off the main tourist tracks - if you do, give me a shout ...

  3. I also love old cars. My husband and I restored a morris minor traveller and a porsche 356 convertable in S.A. Sadly they were both sold to pay a part deposit on our house when we moved to the the UK. R exchange rate to £ was about 18/1 then!!!!!! Diane

  4. Thanks for the comment Diane ... that Porsche 356 convertible sounds like it was a yummy car ... I hope that the new owners has taken good care of it but, still, it's a shame you had to sell it ...

  5. There is a certain air of both mystery and sadness about them .... almost as if they really want to tell their story ! The first photo is my favourite, I think - although they are all great. (LOL re. your last sentence of the post - in such a remote desert outpost, what else was there to do ?!)

  7. I think TV has probably created more opportunities to copulate as the progs are such rubbish people look for other immediate distraction!

Do the cars rust less quickly because they are in an arid area?

  8. Heh Dave ... another angle I didn't think of - you're probably right ...

Yes, I imagine that, being in an arid area, they do rust a lot slower than wrecks where there is a high rainfall and moisture ...

  11. I think they are still worth some money because some people might still want them.

Cars are like us, they need high maintenance costs to keep in shape.
