S'long Spirit ...

I received bad news today - Spirit is dead.

He disappeared on the day before I left the North and I was hoping that he'd only gone wandering, as he has done in the past. I was told this morning that his body has been found in the long grass close to the house.

I strongly suspect that he was zapped by a snake. He was in perfect health and it could only have been a snake which caused him to die so suddenly.

The week before his disappearance it was very hot and humid and there were a lot of large snakes around, they were hunting and were likely all venomous.

I've probably been too lenient in dealing with snakes near the house lately - I was hoping we could live in harmony.

It's slight comfort knowing that he probably did not suffer or die caught in some trap but, still - I feel sad.

  1. My condolences. Animals become such a part of our lives that they leave a big hole when they're gone.

  5. Oh Graham I am so sad for me as well as you. I have been following the photos of Spirit for so long now I feel like I knew him. I am glad that his death was probably very quick, not that it is much satisfaction. I know you will miss him. Sorry, Diane

  6. My heart dropped when I read this Graham - this is life in the wild, where each must take care of himself. I don't think I could cope... But you gave Spirit a chance, and a happy life for a while, and that's worth a lot.

  7. Aw, it's so sad. Spirit was such a beautiful and spirited cat. I'm glad you were able to enjoy his company for a time. Here the snakes are not a threat to little creatures like spirit but wild coyotes that roam the city at night can be.

  8. Hi Graham. I'm so sorry to hear about Spirit :( From your photos Spirit looked a lively, "spirited" companion..... The loss of a pet leaves a hole in one's life.
    Best regards, Sue

  9. That's so sad!!
I attended a funeral yesterday, My fathers cousin, the last living elder in my Family in Canada. He was 90 and was suffering Alzheimer's and had a stroke a few weeks ago. Strange watching someone being lowered into the ground, then we each shovelled dirt onto his pine box.

The death of ones furry companion is no less important, I hate to imagine life without my canine friend.

    My condolences Graham :(

  11. Very sad. Since you have written about him and posted pics you must have been close.
Just wondering if a snake attacked him, then the snake would have eaten him right? I thought most of those snakes can eat large animals.

  12. I think that the only snake which would swallow a cat is a Python, Bill - it's unlikely that Spirit was 'attacked' by a snake, it's likely that he encountered a large Cobra and didn't recognise the danger, probably wanted to play ...

  13. I am so sorry to hear about Spirit's passing. I remember enjoying reading his exploits on your blog. He seemed to be aptly named as he was indeed both highly spirited and a free spirit. He lived free and touched lives. I'm sure he would not have had it differently. Sorry for your loss.

  14. Hi Graham .. "so long Spirit" - as you say .. it's nature's way - that we forget so easily .. still not easy for us humans to come to terms with as animals continue to live with us .. with thoughts - Spirit certainly had life while he was with you .. Hilary
